About the Artist

Shirley Fachilla - Biography

Artist's Statement

There’s a kind of alchemy that happens with painting. The artist sees their subject and interprets it through their own thoughts and perceptions. The painter believes their vision is revealed with every brushstroke; that is certainly their intent. And yet the ultimate viewer can see the same painting in quite another way, sometimes reading an altogether different message, one that creates a completely different set of emotional responses.

Neither painter nor viewer is wrong; what each sees is true and lies there within the brushstrokes. Thus a 17th century artist may think he painted a morality lesson; but his 21st century viewer might see a crystalline vision of a golden moment in time, a celebration of the beauty that light confers on the ordinary.

My truth becomes transformed to yours. Alchemy.

What could be more magical?

About Me...

I’m an oil painter who usually paints a la prima (in one session) whether my subject is a landscape, still life or a figure. In my paintings, I enjoy exploring the patterns that light creates, light that can color a hand the same hue as the skirt on which its rests or by its absence, create shadows to hide a different reality.

Working from life in both landscape and figure is my joy. I am lucky to live in Middle Tennessee, where extraordinary subjects wait around every corner.

I am presently a member of The Chestnut Group, Plein Air Painters for the Land and am a signature member of Women Painters of the West (WAOW) and an elected artist member of the American Artists Professional League.

I have paintings in the collections of the Tennessee State Museum and in the Dunnegan Gallery of Art in Bolivar, Missouri.
